Talking Points
Why Identity Matters:
- We live in a world constantly asking us to define ourselves;
- Many of us — especially parents —can lose our sense of self in roles, expectations, or comparison
- As believers, our identity isn’t found in performance, seasons, or labels — it’s rooted in Christ.
What Does It Mean to Be “In Christ”?
- We belong to Him
- Our old identity no longer defines us
- We live from a place of grace, not striving
- Identity in Christ is not a personality type, ministry title, or parenting success
Common Identity Traps We Fall Into
- Performance-based identity: “I’m only valuable if I’m doing well.”
- Comparison-based identity: Measuring ourselves against others (especially online).
- Role-based identity: Losing ourselves in being a mom, spouse, volunteer, or leader.
- Past-based identity: Letting mistakes, shame, or old labels define us.
- We will be identified by the world, if we aren’t identified in Christ.
Living Out Our Identity in Everyday Family Life
- When we know who we are in Christ, we:
- respond instead of react
- parent from grace, not fear
- model faith, not perfection
- Our children learn identity by watching how we live ours.
- Living authentically in Christ gives our families permission to grow, fail, and try again.
