Nurturing Character in Children

Our whole goal in parenting is to raise our children to be confident adults who pursue God’s plan for their lives. In the time we have to raise them, building character will take them further than anything they learn through academic training. Hear the discussion between two homeschool moms about some ideas to nurture character in your children. 

Talking Points

Character building is more than just instilling good manners; it’s about shaping the very core of a child’s identity.

  • Teach empathy and compassion
  • Teach Integrity and honesty
  • Teach perseverance and resilience – music 
  • Give them/allow the opportunities for them to exhibit these character traits.
  • Read a Proverbs chapter a day a couple of times throughout the year.

  • “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6
  • “Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as Christ God forgave you.” Ephesians 4:32
  • “The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy.” Proverbs 12:22
  • “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4
  • “Let no corrupting talk come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for building up, as fits the occasion, that it may give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29
